Restaurant Eating Tips
- Remember what tastes good today probably won’t make you look good tomorrow
- Restaurant entrees generally have double to triple the calories you need in a meal, so split an entree with a friend and order an extra side salad.
- Always order salad dressing on the side and be sparing.
- Ask for a to-go box early and USE it before you start on your meal...many calories are consumed unconsciously...we tend to eat what's in front of us, so put it away and enjoy it later!
- If you are going to drink, make sure and have a FULL glass of water in between each drink. It will do two things, keep you better hydrated so you wont feel as bad, and chances are you will drink less and therefore avoid extra calories.
- Ask questions. If you don’t know what something is ask, that way you can make a better menu selection.
- Customize. Many places won't mind if you ask them to put the sauce on the side or grill it instead of frying. Chances are you can also trade that potato or fry option for a veggie!
- Don’t be fooled, it always tastes better when eaten out because most restaurants use a 'glaze’ on meats, veggies, and other sides that enhance the flavor, add the calories and make the broccoli stay green for the whole meal!!!!
- Create accountability. Tell someone BEFORE you go out that you aren’t going to drink or you are going to have a healthy meal, or you are going to just have half. That way the temptation to deviate from your plan is lessened.
- Try and avoid traps you know you can’t resist. If your friends are going somewhere you know you will have a downfall, meet up with them after dinner, or show up a bit late and avoid the pre-dinner drinks/appetizers!
